Paychex pricing: what it costs and what Paychex does not publish
Paychex publishes no rate card. Every pricing page on paychex.com resolves to a quote request, so there is no official Paychex dollar figure to repeat. What Paychex does publish, checked October 27, 2026, is a range: $30–$100 per employee per month for outsourced payroll, and $30–$100 per month for a single employee. Paychex Flex itself has four tiers — Basic, Foundations, Advanced and Complete — and each tier's price reads Request Pricing. Official Paychex sources
That is why this page does not show a Paychex price table. Nine of the ten pages ranking for this keyword show a price; none of them can be checked against Paychex, because Paychex publishes none. What you can do instead is rebuild the quote from the billing units Paychex actually charges, and hold the written quote to the ranges Paychex states in its own words.
The Paychex tiers that exist
Paychex Flex payroll packages are sold in four tiers on the Compare Payroll Packages & Pricing page. All four carry the same button, and that button is the point.
Every tier's price link goes to the same place: paychex.com/contact/sales. There is no figure behind the button on the page itself. The same is true of the single-employee page and the small-business page — both say a representative will go over pricing with you, and neither publishes an amount. Checked October 27, 2026.
The one rate card Paychex does publish belongs to a different product. SurePayroll — a Paychex company, its own footer reads "© 2026 A Paychex Company" — publishes a flat card: $29/month base + $7 per worker, multi-state payroll $9.99/month on top of the first state, and year-end W-2 and 1099-NEC forms billed annually at $50 base + $5 per form. Its household tier lists $39/month including one employee. These are SurePayroll's prices, checked October 27, 2026. They are not Paychex Flex pricing, and a page that puts them under a Paychex Flex heading is misleading you. SurePayroll official pricing page
What Paychex does publish, and the exact date it was checked
| What Paychex states | The figure | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Outsourced payroll cost per employee per month | $30–$100 | Paychex article on payroll costs for small businesses |
| Payroll service cost for one employee | $30–$100 per month | Paychex article on payroll for one employee |
| Total payroll cost as a multiple of base pay | 1.25×–1.4× | Paychex article on payroll costs for small businesses |
| Pay frequency effect | Weekly runs often cost more than bi-weekly or monthly | Paychex article on payroll for one employee |
| On-demand pay billing unit | Flat per-transaction fee | Paychex article on payroll costs for small businesses |
These are ranges Paychex publishes about the market it sells in, not quotes for your business. They are still useful: they are the only checkable official numbers on the subject, and a quote that falls outside them is worth a question. Official price source · checked October 27, 2026
Rebuild the Paychex quote from its billing units
Because Paychex does not publish rates, the quote arrives as amounts without visible derivation. Ask for each of these separately, then fill the blank. A quote with one bundled monthly number and no unit breakdown is the thing to push back on.
| Charge to request | The unit Paychex may use | How to annualize it |
|---|---|---|
| Base monthly fee | Per month, by tier | Base × chargeable months |
| Per-employee fee | Per employee per month, or per employee per year | Rate × billable people × months (or × 1 if annual) |
| Pay frequency | May multiply the run price | Rate × payroll runs per year |
| Direct deposit | Flat per payment, or per payment method | Rate × payments issued |
| Tax filing service | Annual, or per run | Enter as billed |
| Year-end forms | Annual, sometimes per form | Enter as billed |
| Implementation | One-time | Enter as billed |
| HR, benefits or compliance modules | Per month, sometimes tier-limited | Rate × months |
| On-demand or instant pay | Flat per transaction | Rate × transactions |
Paychex's own articles make two of these points explicitly: pay frequency changes the bill, and extras such as direct deposit and tax filing add to it. Ask which of these are already inside your tier before counting them again.
Work the ranges into a number you can check
These examples use Paychex's own published ranges, not an assumed Paychex price. They show the size of the question you are asking, so you can see whether a quote is plausible.
Example A: ten billable people across one year, at both ends of Paychex's stated range
- Low end: $30 × 10 people × 12 months = $3,600/year.
- High end: $100 × 10 people × 12 months = $12,000/year.
- Monthly equivalent: $300 at the low end, $1,000 at the high end.
A ten-person quoted number far outside $300–$1,000 per month is worth questioning — not because the range is a promise, but because it is Paychex's own stated market band. Official price source · checked October 27, 2026
Example B: one employee, one year
- Low end: $30 × 1 × 12 = $360/year.
- High end: $100 × 1 × 12 = $1,200/year.
This is the single-employee case Paychex publishes its own range for, and it is the case most often quoted as a flat monthly number with nothing else attached. Confirm whether the figure includes tax filing, direct deposit and the year-end form processing.
Example C: the same range applied to total cost, not to the software
Paychex states total payroll cost can run 1.25×–1.4× base pay. At an employee's $30/hour base pay, that is $37.50–$42/hour total. For 2,000 hours in a year at $30/hour, base wages are $60,000, so the total cost band is $75,000–$84,000. That band covers wages, payroll taxes, benefits and the payroll service together — it is not a software price, and the software is only one line inside it. Confirm the quote in writing before it becomes a budget
With a quote-based vendor, the document that resolves the price is a signed scope, not a web page. Download the checklist below, fill it from the quote you actually received, and send it back to the account team as the confirmation request.

For a monthly line use rate × units × chargeable months. For a run-based or usage line use rate × events. Enter a one-time amount directly. Leave an unknown line blank and mark it "awaiting quote" — an unknown amount is not a zero, and a missing line is where the surprise is.
Then check the total against Paychex's own stated band. If your annualized per-employee cost sits outside $30–$100 per employee per month, ask which line causes it before you accept the quote. That question is answerable by Paychex in one reply, and it is the fastest way to find a line that was quoted in the wrong unit.
Four questions to ask before signing
- Which tier is this quote for, and what does the next tier add? Paychex marks Foundations "Best Value". Ask for the difference in dollars per month, not in feature adjectives.
- Is the per-employee charge monthly or annual, and does it count W-2 and 1099 recipients? This single question changes the annual total more than any feature choice.
- What is the price in month 13? Promotional or introductory pricing on the first period is common across payroll vendors. Ask for the standard rate that applies from the first renewal, in writing.
- What does cancelling cost, and how much notice is required? The notice period sets the overlap you will actually pay for if you switch providers mid-year.
Compare against the vendors that do publish
Paychex's quote is only comparable once it is a number. The Gusto page reviewed on October 22, 2026 displayed Simple at $49/month + $6/person/month, Plus at $80 + $12, and Premium at $180 + $22. The QuickBooks page displayed $88/month + $6.50/employee/month, with an introductory base of $44 for three months. Both are published figures you can verify, which is what makes them usable as a comparison baseline. Gusto pricing worksheet · QuickBooks payroll pricing
When you enter Paychex's quoted base and per-employee rate into the payroll cost calculator, keep the same headcount and the same number of months you used for the others. Comparing a Paychex monthly figure against a Gusto annual figure will make one of them look wrong, and neither is.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Paychex cost?
Paychex publishes no rate card, so there is no single official price to quote. Its own stated range is $30–$100 per employee per month for outsourced payroll, and $30–$100 per month for a single employee, both checked October 27, 2026. Your actual cost comes from the written quote, which you can check against that band.
Does Paychex have a published price for one employee?
No. The single-employee page states a $30–$100 per month range depending on software versus full service, and notes that weekly runs often cost more than bi-weekly or monthly. For a real one-person quote, ask for the base, the per-person charge and whether tax filing and direct deposit are inside it.
Is $29/month Paychex pricing?
No. $29/month plus $7 per worker is SurePayroll's published card. SurePayroll's own footer identifies it as "A Paychex Company", so it is a Paychex product with its own price — but it is not the Paychex Flex rate card, and the two should not be quoted interchangeably.
How do I compare a quote-based vendor like Paychex against Gusto or QuickBooks?
Convert the Paychex quote into the same units as the published competitors first: base per month, per-employee per month, and any one-time or annual lines. Then run the same headcount and duration through each. A monthly figure compared with an annual figure will make one vendor look wrong when neither is.
What should I ask Paychex in writing before accepting a quote?
Which tier the quote covers, whether the per-employee charge is monthly or annual and whether it counts 1099 recipients, the standard rate that applies from the first renewal, and the cancellation notice period. Ask for each as a written line, then reconcile the total against Paychex's own stated range.
